the SPARK 149 ~ Here’s the rub…

Hi, Reader,
He was one of my absolute favorites.
The first book I ever read of his was “Your Erroneous Zones.”
I’m talking, of course, about Dr. Wayne Dyer, who sadly passed away in 2015 (I teared up when I saw he had passed).
I saw Dr. Dyer every chance I could when he was speaking in San Francisco, had a handful of books signed by him, and even got a hug from him when I told him how much his work got me through the passing of my husband.
One of my favorite quotes of his:
It’s a powerful phrase that has always stuck with me.
It was in the early 90s when I first got into self-help and goal-setting. I devoured everything I could get my hands on (which was easy because I was working in a bookstore).
As much as I loved it, I think it’s probably safe to say some of that is the early version of hustle culture.
So when I discovered Wayne Dyer, it was like a huge sigh of relief.
He had a great way of combining self-responsibility, taking action, and getting into alignment that made everything feel possible (and he had a great sense of humor).
Which is what we all need right now.
I caught up with a friend yesterday afternoon who was feeling a little burned out with the digital marketing space. She was sharing that there’s been some backlash (for lack of a better word) with internet marketing gurus.
Which only confirmed what I’ve been feeling about this space (and why I love discovering new people).
Regardless of your niche, consumers/customers have gotten smarter, and people are tired of the BS.
Sales tactics and marketing strategies will always work, but if you don’t pull in something that is unique to you that you’ve created, it can feel like a cheap imitation.
This is the absolute best way to differentiate yourself.
BUT… here’s the rub.
It’s not easy.
It takes courage to show up.
Every time you show up as yourself, there’s a risk involved.
Trolls, unsubscribes, negative comments… they’re all just part of the process.
Here’s what happens when you focus on showing up as yourself and focusing on the RIGHT people, using unsubscribes as an example:
I had this image come to me the other day when I was driving and listening to a podcast.
Even though our logical brains know that it doesn’t do any good to have big lists, followers, or audiences… when they’re not the right people and are unengaged… the little kid in us still doesn’t like it.
No matter what you do online, the more you put yourself out there, the more you open yourself up to this.
Which is why it’s even MORE important to…
- Say what you want to say and how you want to say it
- OWN who you are
- Be as specific as possible in your content and marketing (people will self-select and go elsewhere when you’re clear)
- Create the things you want to create to serve your ideal customers
- Unsubscribe, leave, unfollow, curate, and be fiercely protective of what you allow in your space
- Trust and listen to yourself
Building an online business takes time, energy, and effort.
If you’re going to “do the work” anyway, why not do work you love?
Connect with people that light you up…
Spend time on platforms you enjoy…
YOU get to choose how and where you spend your time and energy.

September has felt like a total whirlwind.
Yesterday, it felt like it was still summer, and now I’m floored that we’re ten days away from October. 🎃🍂🍁
I’m doing everything I can to stay present and focus on one day at a time. I’m off to Costa Rica in less than a month for our first-ever IGNITE Women’s Business retreat, and by the time I get back (Nov. 12th), the holiday season will be in full swing.
I have a couple of fun announcements I’ll share in the next few days… one is about my upcoming LIVE workshop! Stay tuned.
Have a wonderful rest of your day,
Kim
